When you’re a beginner photographer, you have a lot to figure out.

There’s all the camera settings to worry about. There’s also the matter of composing compelling shots.

You also need to figure out how to get tack-sharp photos – you don’t want blurry subjects messing up your images!

Fortunately, there are many different things you can do to get pin-sharp images.

Best of all, many of these approaches can be done in-camera, so you don’t have to try to sharpen slightly out-of-focus images in post-processing.

The easiest way to get sharp images is totakesharp images in the first place, and that’s exactly what Jason Vong teaches you how to do in the video above.

What’s the Sharpness Problem?

As Jason discusses in the video, there are several issues that could lead to out-of-focus images.

First, the subject might be moving, which causes their motion to be blurred.

Second, the focus might simply be missed, so you focus the camera on an object slightly in front of the subject, like their sunglasses, and not on their eyes, which is what should be nice and sharp.

Third, you might have the ISO setting too high. When this happens, images look grainy, which can give the impression that the photo isn’t tack-sharp.

So, what’s the solution?

Jason discusses a number of camera settings you can manipulate to correct each of the sharpness problems discussed above.

He goes into detail in the video, so I’ll just quickly summarize them below and provide links to further resources to help you learn:

Increase the shutter speed to avoid motion blur Use a smaller aperture to deepen the depth of field Choose the focus point that’s active, rather than letting the camera do it for you Avoid using high ISOs

All of these solutions are easy enough to implement. Just follow Jason’s lead, check out the resources listed above and below, and with some practice, you’ll find that you can create beautifully sharp images!
